Frequently Asked Questions

+ Why should I learn to dance?

By stepping onto the dance floor, you are improving many areas of your life. It will not only boost your confidence, mood and social skills, but your body tone and posture, too. Learning to dance is more than an investment in technique; it is an investment in a fun and healthier lifestyle. Studies have shown that learning to dance can improve brain function and cognitive ability, while helping prevent or delay Alzheimer’s disease in late adulthood.

+ What if I don't have a dancer’s body?

We are so glad that you asked! If you have a body then you have a dancer’s body. Dance is for everyBODY.

+ Do you accept people with disabilities?

Absolutely! We believe everyone should dance. We accept and welcome people with disabilities. In fact, many of our instructors are certified to teach aspiring wheelchair dancers. We even work with children who have learning disabilities.

+ Will it be too hard?

There is always a learning curve, but not to worry! Dance styles are very repetitive and are designed to be refined. The more you come, the more familiar the movements will become! Our classes are designed with the non-professional adult, even the brand new to dance adult in mind!

+ Can I achieve my fitness goals through dance?

We’re so glad you asked! Dancing is one of the best activities recommended by health experts and scientists for both body and mind. Different styles and different tempos can help you achieve most fitness goals including cardio fitness, muscle toning, flexibility, strength, balance, and more. Look good, feel great, and have fun doing it!

+ How do I pick the best level for me?

If you are uncertain as to what level you belong in we can help you choose! Most of our classes unless noted with intermediate or advanced, are designed for anyone to walk in and try without experience.

+ How do I sign up?

Sign up by logging in or creating a Recess account here.

+ What do I wear?

What can you move in comfortably? Wear that! Most women prefer leggings or yoga pants with a comfortable fitness top, gentlemen prefer sweats or fitness shorts with a t-shirt. Tights, leotards, tennis skirts, tanks, T-shirts and crop tops all welcome!

+ What shoes do I wear?

If you are just beginning feel free to join us barefoot or in socks! For Barre and Flexibility classes, most people choose to do barefoot, but wear socks if that’s comfortable for you. Ballet shoes, Jazz shoes or socks are great for ballet, jazz, lyrical or contemporary. Tap shoes or tennis shoes for tap. Tennis shoes or socks for hip hop. Character shoes, ballroom shoes, comfortable heels or of course socks for Sassy Stilettos! As you dance more you will discover what you prefer, and your teacher can offer suggestions!

+ Do you have a safe floor?

Safety is important to us. Ever danced the night away at a party or wedding on a concrete dance floor? Ouch! At the dance Barre we have floating dance floors. This means the floor sits on top of high-density foam that is designed to absorb shock so that your body does not!

+ How do I get there?

We are in The Briarcrest Shopping Center on Briarcrest drive, across the street from Bryan Highschool. Look between the Barbershop Academy and the Center for Independent Living. Park anywhere in the spacious lot!

+ What do I do when I get there?

If a previous class is in session feel free to wait in the front or back lobby. Once the studio is free head in, take off your shoes, stash your belongings in the chairs or cubbies and find your place on the dance floor. If it’s a Barre or Flexibility class, grab the equipment the teacher requests before spreading out in the studio. The teacher will prompt you where to begin the class, ballet usually will begin at the barre other classes in the center.
